Chinese Police Check

A Police Certificate is an important document that verifies a person’s clean criminal record during their stay in China. This matters for individuals who have lived in China and are now seeking to work, study, or obtain residency in another country.

In Australian visa applications, applicants are generally required to provide such documents. For applicants from China, the Department of Home Affairs usually accepts two types of documents:
1.    A Certificate of No Criminal Record issued by the Chinese Public Security Bureau (PSB) or a local police station ; 
2.    A Notarial Certificate of No Criminal Conviction issued by a Chinese notary office.

For permanent residency or long-term visa assessment stages, for example:
   •    Permanent residency applications
   •    Character checks before citizenship applications

How to obtain a Notarial Certificate of No Criminal Conviction in China.

The general process is as follows:

* Apply for a Certificate of No Criminal Record from the local police station where the person’s household registration (hukou) is located or where they previously resided.

* Take the certificate to a Notary Public Office in China to apply for a Notarial Certificate of No Criminal Record.

* The notary office will issue a notarial certificate, which usually includes both the Chinese document and an official English translation.

You don't need a NAATI translation for the notarial certificate version.

Situations where a police certificate from the PSB or a local police station with a NAATI translation may be accepted: 

* For some temporary visas, a police certificate issued directly by the Public Security Bureau may be accepted. However, we strongly recommend that you confirm with your migration agent which type of police clearance certificate is required for your visa application.

* In Australia, some organisations will also accept a police certificate from the PSB in China, together with a NAATI-certified English translation. These may include:
   •    educational institutions
   •    certain employers
   •    landlord or tenancy background checks
   •    other civil or administrative purposes
